It is usually located in a hard granite rock as it is the pressures related to the formation of this igneous rock that makes the necessary conditions for the gold to be formed. Just like Diamonds it is a process of extreme pressure that basically squeezes the gold into veins.

I believe that gold was found in 1849 in california, which caused the gold rush of 1849 of course. But im not quite sure if it is still there.
