Pencil cedar also known as Juniperus procera, and according to basic English known as African Juniper, basically is a coniferous tree resident to the mountains of eastern African regions like eastern Sudan south to Zimbabwe, and towards the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula.
It is a distinctive tree of the Afromontane flora. Its average height is anywhere between 20-25m, having a trunk size any where between 1.5-2 diameter and a largely conical to rounded or irregular crown. The leaves are usually of two types, juvenile needle-like leaves 8-15mm extended on seedlings, and mature scale-leaves 0.5-3 mm extended on older plants, set in decussate pairs or whorls of three.
It is mainly dioeciously with individual male and female plants, but at times individual plants create both sexes.
