Georgian Bay is a bay of Lake Huron. Lake Huron is one of the five Great Lakes of North America (the others are Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Superior) and Georgian Bay is one of the large bays of the lake. The key body of the area is situated to the east and northeast of the Bruce Peninsula, to the south of Greater Sudbury and to the north of Collingwood.

The North Channel of Georgian Bay extends further to St Joseph Island, near Sault St Marie in the west. It divides Manitoulin Island from the mainland of northern Ontario. The Main Channel divides Manitoulin Island from the Bruce Peninsula. It joins Georgian Bay to the rest of Lake Huron. A series of smaller channels such as the Mississagi Strait and the False Detour Channel connect the North Channel to the main water body that lies between the Manitoulin, Cockburn, Drummond and St Joseph islands.
