The Colusa County is situated in the central valley of the US state of California, and is positioned northwest of the state capital Sacramento. According to the census conducted in the year 2000 the total population of this region was around 18,804. Colusa is also the county seat.

Colusa County basically was one of the first ever counties created in California, during the 1850's period. Certain portions of the county were distributed to the Tehama County in the year 1856, as well as to the Glenn County in the year 1891.

The county gets its name after a pair of Mexican land grants, Coluses (1844) and Colus (1845). The total area of this county is estimated at 2,995 square kilometres out of which 2,980 square kilometres is land and 14 square kilometres is covered by water.
