How Can You Tell If Your Finger Is Broken?

I was playing basketball and my pinky bent back all the way to the back of my hand. I've been trying to move it, but the pain is excruciating even if I twitch it. My parents say it's jammed and it'll be fine in a few hours, but now it's extremely swollen and when I try to bend it, you can hear this scraping sound and something sharp tries to pop out of the skin.
