This is a complete myth that mother hamster eats the new born. The fact is the babies are very immature and undeveloped and they as they are fragile so many of them die. These babies eat the dead babies because the smell of the dead attracts them. You must ensure that they are in a healthy environment like food, shelter and temperature all are good for them apart from them they get angry in summers due to heat so keep them cool.

I had both hampsters and gerbils growing up... And every time the "father" got left in with the "mother" and "babies"... They would eat them! Make sure that the "father" isn't in with the "mother" and "babies!"
