Harsh and atrocious, they had to endure four winters when they only expected one to fight through. It was wet, cold, windy and the earth was constantly being churned up by bombs, grenades, and every other weapon which was destroying the land. The trenches had to be lived in year after year through the war so the men were putting up with massive destruction of the land. It was a horrible place to fight.
