When Was Bristol Rovers Football Club Founded?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Bristol Rovers Football Club was founded in 1883 but were originally called 'The Black Arabs' in reference to the name of the rugby team that played next door to themselves. This name lasted for a few years before being replaced by Eastville Rovers and Bristol Eastville Rovers. By 1897, the name had been permanently changed to Bristol Rovers Football Club.

The club started out by playing in the Southern League, but in 1920 it became a founder member of the Football League Division Three.

Bristol Rovers have had a variety of different home ground during their existence. These include Purdown, Three Acres, Schoolmasters Cricket Ground, Durdham Downs, Ridgeway, Eastville Stadium (where they stayed for 89 years from 1897-1996), Twerton Park (1986-1996) and most recently the Memorial Stadium which has a capacity for almost 12,000 people.

Bristol Rovers currently reside in League Two and finished the 2005/06 season in 12th place.
