The human heart contains four chambers; there is a small atrium on the right side and a larger ventricle and a small atrium and an even larger ventricle on the left side. The organ basically acts as a double pump – the two sides squeeze at the same time but the pump on the right acts independently of the pump on the left.

When blood comes back from the body, it goes into the right atrium and then right ventricle and is then pumped to the lungs to pick up more oxygen. It then travels back to the heart, entering the left atrium and then left ventricle to be pumped all around the body again, to supply every cell with the fresh oxygen it has just picked up.

The circulation that passes between the right side of the heart and the lungs is called the pulmonary circulation, and the one that passes between the left side of the heart and the body is called the corporeal circulation.
