South Asia especially South east Asia has been the hub of civilization and culture since ancient times. These cultural activities has given rise to a society that is a strict follower of culture and norms. There are certain social norms that are found in only this part of the world. Some of these norms can be considered as social evils because of their impact on certain segments of the society and the progress of South Asian countries as a whole.

Some of these social evils are as follows:

    - Dowry : The money and material objects that parents have to give to their daughters when they are getting married. A custom that has been practiced since centuries in South East Asia.

    - Gender Inequality: There is a gender inequality in this area. Men are considered superior to women and have more opportunities. This point of view is seriously hampering the development of these countries.

    - Less education facilities for women.

    - Marriages at early age: This is specially harmful to girls.

    - Less rights for women.

On real grounds, nothing as such is being done to eradicate these problems. There are certain NGO's that are working in these societies for bringing about change. However, change is not possible until and unless the people change themselves.

A lot is changing now, with the proliferation of media in these countries. Also, people especially men are now educated and this education has broadened their perspectives and they now think in different ways. For example, The practice of Dowry is now being reduced or eliminated in most of the areas of these countries.
