Sunderland Association Football Club was founded in 1879 by a schoolteacher. Their original name reflects this as they were called Sunderland and District Teachers Association Football Club.
The team were admitted into the Football League in the 1890/91 season and were an instant success. The club won the League in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913 and 1936. They have also won the FA cup twice in 1937 and 1973. They are the sixth most successful club in English football history.
Sunderland AFC have played their home games at the ground of the Stadium of Light since 1997. It has a capacity for over 49,000 people. Prior to this the club played at Roker Park from 1898 onwards.
In recent times, the club has been bouncing back and forth between the Premiership and the Championship. They were unfortunately relegated from the Premiership in the 2005/06 season after finishing bottom of the table.
