JPEG is stands for Joint Photographers Expert Group. This is file format for the images. JPEG system compresses the data in the images. The original format of the images is Bitmap. A bitmap is a matrix of pixels that forms an image. The problem with the bitmap is that its size. A small image may be of 500 KB or above. And transferring such amount of data on the internet is not easy. Especially when we have to send multiple pictures.

For these reasons the compressed format is developed. JPEG system reduces the redundant array of pixels and the size of the whole pictures reduces dramatically. So it is easy to transfer multiple images on the internet.

JPEG is not the only compression technique, there are some other as well like GIF and PNG. In the GIF the compression is done by reducing the number of colors in the pictures. The GIF format also supports the animated images. PNG is a new format than the JPEG and GIF. The PNG format supports the transparency effect. If you want to convert a bitmap into JPEG a lot of software are used. ACD see can also be used to change the format of the images.
