The rapper 50 Cent's real name is Curtis James Jackson III. His stagename is thought to be a metaphor for 'change', but also borrowed from the name of a gangster in Fort Greene.
Curtis Jackson was born on the 6th July 1976 and has sold around 20 million albums worldwide to date. He has somewhat of a tragic background. He grew up without the presence of his father and was raised by his mother for a few years. However, his mother was a bisexual drug dealer and was found dead before Curtis turned 13 years old. He was then raised by his grandparents.
He began to become seriously interested in rap and was signed to Columbia Records in 1999. He wrote various rap songs, some of which offended other rappers. In April 2000 50 Cent was shot at 9 times, with hits to the jaw and the leg. Whilst in recovery, Columbia Records dropped him from their label.
50 Cent bounced back and now has his own record label G-Unit Records.
