How Long Does A Copyright Last?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Copyright Act 1957 legally protects the original creations of musicians, dramatics, artists, and literary work. The Act forbids the reproduction, adaptation, communication and translation without prior permission with concerned parties. The period of copyright duration is fixed. Registration of copyright work with Education Department is not mandatory. It carries weightage in a law suit.

The copyright protection is effective for literary, musical and artistic work for the entire life span of the creator and 60 years from the end of the year of creators' demise.

Rules for cinematograph films, photographers, computer program and sounding recording vary slightly. These original works get legal protection for a duration of 60 years. The Act is applicable from the fag end of the year when the work was presented to public. Even anonymous or pseudonymous works are covered under this Act.

The symbol © on original work indicates Copyright. The onus lies with the creator to detect infringement of his work.
