A rationibus was the secretary of finance of the Roman Empire. He was in charge of the maintenance of the accounts and expenditures of the fiscus; the imperial treasury. During the early days of the early Roman Empire the role of the official was very much considerable. Initially the office was held by a freedman however since the beginning of the 2nd century A.D. and during the reign of Hadrian. During Hadrian's time the Equestrians (Equites) controlled all of the accounts and finances. This was done due to the falling reputation of the freedman; it is said that they were indulging more and more into corruption.
