Where Does Consciousness Lie?

Answer Question

For Medieval theologians this was a central question of human existance.  The centre of consciousness would also be the place where the soul was held.  So if it was a specific place in the human body, then it could be possible, in theory, to find, see, feel or touch a human soul itself.

Even if you weren't aware of it because, after all, the human soul was supposed to be something that transcended the material world.

For modern thinkers, the question of human consciousness and where it's located centres around parts of the brain and their function. Some would say that this way of thinking is too narrow.  It can be argued that consciousness extends throughout our physical being, so every part of the body contributes to it and is part of it. As is every input sensory channel.  To focus on the brain is wrong because it is merely a processing centre.

Ask an amputee how much they miss a seemingly unnecessary limb before you dismiss this view.

Modern religious thinkers and ethical philosophers are often interested in how the morals and ethics of people are derived, and how these contribute to the formation of consciousness.
