The Threepenny Opera is a famous musical written in 1928 by the well known German socialist and dramatist Bertolt Brecht in collaboration with the composer Kurt Weill and Elisabeth Hauptmann, a noted writer from Germany; the Threepenny Opera was based on John Gay's The Beggar's Opera written in 1728.

The opera was famous for several reasons one of which was Brecht's satirization of capitalist society and the song Mack the Knife co written by Brecht and Weill. The Threepenny Opera proved to be highly successful in Germany with its music becoming a trendsetter world wide. The musical was translated in to 18 languages with as many as four film versions of the musical being produced.

The plot of the musical set in the city of London revolves around Macheath an anti-hero character who marries the daughter of an influential person of the city Jonathan Peachum who disapproves of the match and attempts to get Macheath executed for which he employs a considerable amount of political influence; the story ends on a happy note with Macheath being saved from the gallows and instead being honored.
