The Shop Around the Corner is an enjoyable romantic comedy and was directed by Lubitsch. In The Shop Around the Corner, Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan act as workers in a small shop that is always on the brink of bankruptcy. They can barely stand each other, little knowing that they have been romancing each other as secret pen-pals. The plot is thickened, with complications stemming from competition with other workers on the staff. This inspired 'You've got Mail' released in 1998, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
Director Nora Ephron wanted to explore the same scenario in our cyber age. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan play the two lovers, who correspond as anonymous email pals. Ryan owns a small bookstore, while Hanks opens one of his many mega book stores just across the street, threatening her business. This recreates the original's love hate relationship.
