    The city of Des Moines is a French word which is translated as City of Monks in English. Des Moines is the capital and also the largest city in the state of Iowa in the United States of America. It is pronounced as demwan in French. It is pronounced the same way in English as it is in French. It was incorporated into the union on September 22, 1851. The city of Des Moines was originally called Fort Des Moines.

    The capital of the state of Iowa was the city of Iowa City until the name of the city of Fort Des Moines was shortened to Des Moines in the year 1857, which was six years after its incorporation. The city of Des Moines is also the county seat of Polk County. According to the census of population of the year 2000, the population of the city of Des Moines was approximately 198, 682.
