My Dog Has Bloody Diarrhea. What Should I Do?

I hope now that your pup is ok.  Take your dog, along with a stool sample to a vet.  Make sure your dog is properly fed, watered, and sheltered.  If you can not afford a vet - call your local humane society and tell them what your situation is.

There is a disease called HGE Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis. Many dogs suffer from it. Its most notable symptom is sudden attack of bloody diarrhea on a healthy dog. Other symptoms its carries are: Vomiting, not eating (anorexia), and listlessness (slowness). What causes HGE?

At this time, the exact grounds of this disease are unknown. There are numerous hypotheses - diet, a bacterial virus or bacterial toxin, virus, reaction to an intestinal parasite, etc. - but nothing has been proven. Stress may play a function in the development of HGE.

Dogs that have an episode of HGE may be prone to a different incident. Many dogs never experience HGE.

It occurs in young dogs mostly ranging from 2-4 years. Mostly small size breeds get affected from it. Most dogs recover from it on proper treatment. Few other diseases also show such symptoms like:
