From the C5 to C10th centuries Early historic Scotland was the home to Angles, Britons, Picts, settlers from Ireland, by the end of this period the Vikings arrived.
What we know of the label assigned to the Picts comes from Classical sources and refers to the people who inhabited certain areas of present day Scotland before the C8AD. The name Picti appears in Classical sources and is thought to refer to ' the painted ones'. It was used by AD 297, however we cannot know whether it was used by Roman's or by the people themselves as a tribal name.
They seem to have lived North of the Forth- Clyde isthus. It is possible that they were a mixture of different tribal groupings who amalgamated against the Roman army in northern Britain.
The Picts were great crafts people and artists. Many insights into their later culture can be seen on carved stones in eastern Scotland.
