URL stands for uniform resource locator and it specifies where a certain resource is located and what should be the method to retrieve it on the World Wide Web. The URL is commonly known as a web address. It has to parts, the first one being the protocol identifier that specifies the protocol necessary for the document. After that is the resource name which specifies the IP address where the document is located. For example in the URL, q583004.html., http is the protocol while the resource name appears after the colon.
