What Was Gulf War?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Gulf War happened in 1990 – 1991 and was triggered by the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.  It was a conflict between Iraq and a coalition force from 20 countries led by the United States.  It was sanctioned by the United Nations with the aim to liberate Kuwait.

The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq happened on 2 August 1990 because Iraq said that Iraq said that Kuwait was illegally slant-drilling petroleum across Iraq's border.   Strong economic sanctions were imposed by the United Nations and when hostilities began in January 1991, a decisive victory resulted for the coalition forces.

The war is also known as the First Gulf War, the Persian Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm, and the main battles were in the air and on the ground in Iraq, Kuwait and on the border areas of Saudi Arabia.  The war itself didn't expand to outside this area although some Iraqi missiles were fired on Israeli cities.
