What Can You Tell Me About The Breed Of Dog "Basenji"?
Answers
The Basenji originates from Central Africa and it still remains a mystery how long this breed has been established for. It is sometimes known as the Congo Dog and has a life expectancy of 12 years. Its weight ranges from 9.5-11kg (21-24 lb) and its height is 41-43cm (16-17 in).
The Basenji was first used for hunting game but today its main use is just for companionship. It is a very quiet and graceful dog and rarely barks. This, and its tolerance of heat, makes it a very efficient hunter.
Instead of barking like most dogs, this particular breed makes noises like that of a wolf, and howl in an unusual manner. The howling sound is sometimes described as very similar to that of an Alpine yodeler.
Another thing the Basenji has in common with the wolf is the pattern of its breeding cycles - it only has one per year unlike most breeds which have two.
