When Were The First 'Modern' Olympic Games Held?

Answer Question

The modern Olympic Games have taken place since 1896.  They take place every four years, although there have been breaks during both World Wars.

The Olympics as we know them are based on an ancient Greek festival which was held at Olympia.  The first recorded date for these games was around 776 BC.  However, the Olympics are thought to have pre-dated the date by hundreds of years and legends associate their beginning with the feats of the Gods.

The idea to re-start the Olympics was the brainchild of Baron Pierre de Coubertin who was a Frenchman.  He was convinced that sport could actually unite nations and be a means of expressing patriotism without aggression.  Linked into this was his belief that the amateur should glory in competing, not just focus on the winning.

Coubertin helped form the International Olympic Committee which was founded in 1894.  The first modern Olympics then took place two years later in Athens.
