ATM fees can get very high, especially if you use privately owned and operated machines. In Canada, if you use a private machine, the company may charge you up to $2.00 for each transaction, and you will usually also have to pay additional $0.50 to your own bank for processing the transaction.
Luckily, there are some easy ways to save on ATM fees. Firstly, always use ATM machines provided by your own bank. If you tend to use these machines a lot, then consider signing up for a banking package which will charge you a flat monthly rate (of usually about $4.00) for an unlimited number of ATM transactions.
If you prefer not to sign up for such a package, consider taking out more money at once and thus using ATM's less frequently. For example, instead of taking out $40 twice a week, withdraw $200 once or twice a month. Another good idea is to use tellers instead of ATM's, especially if you are willing to wait in line.
You may also consider using your credit card, rather than paying with cash, or your interac card. Normally, you will not be charged any fees for credit card transactions.
