A Sydney Silky, or Silky Terrier, is an Australian Terrier that first emerged in the Sydney area as a result of crosses between Skye, Yorkshire, Norwich and indigenous Australian Terrier-type dogs.
The Sydney Silky does indeed look like a large glossy Yorkie with a hint of other terriers thrown in for good measure. It is however a quite distinct breed that is widely recognized in Australasia and in India.
A number of Sydney Silkies were exhibited in Britain in the 1930s but a large following for the breed has yet to develop. Either that or they are being mistaken for outsized Yorkshire Terriers. In temperament, at any rate, they are similar to the Yorkie, being game and inquisitive, and showing the intelligence so familiar in the Yorkshire Terrier.
Attaining a height of 10 inches and averaging 10lbs in weight, the Silky is not particularly fragile in stature. Their colour is slate blue, blue and tan and sandy red, often with dark masks.
