A cell is a unit of life. It consists of a mass of living matter called protoplasm. Protoplasm is a complex jelly-like substance in which endless chemical activities are carried out. It is a mixture of many compounds arranged in an orderly manner. 70% to 90% of the protoplasm of a cell is water, the rest consists of mineral salts and organic compounds such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Since protoplasm is a mixture, its composition varies from plant to plant and from animal to animal. Protoplasm exists in two forms:

    1. Sol State (or liquid state)
    2. Gel State, so- called because its consistency resembles that of jelly.
Though scientists know the various compounds that make up protoplasm, no one has been able to prepare a mixture which can really be called protoplasm. This is because:
    1. The exact nature of protoplasm is still unknown. It is very complex and we do not as yet fully understand all the details of its organization and
    2. So far we have not been able to reproduce the environmental conditions under which life could originate.
The protoplasm of a cell consists of three parts, namely: the nucleus, cytoplasm and cell surface membrane (plasma membrane).
