What Is Angling?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Angling is one of the oldest arts in fishing.  Substantial evidence has been found, dating the practice back to the prehistoric times.  Angling is basically the practice of employing a rod and line for the prospect of fishing.  Archaeologists have discovered such fish-hooks, which suggested the mode of fishing people in olden times used to employ.

Moreover some other evidence has also been found in the form of ancient Chinese and Assyrian literature that describes the art.

As for fly-fishing, this was one practice that the Romans were familiar with.  In the ancient times; food was a basic source of survival and angling was just one of the methods to obtain food for man.  It was never taken in the form of an art as it is viewed today.  Angling has its share of varieties, which can intensify its appeal for people who view it as an art and some even seek mastery over this art being attracted by its quaint allure.

It is one of the ancient past time, popularly known beyond the beginning of history. The Greeks and Romans were fully aware of it. Angling comprises of rod, line and hooks to catch fish.

Fishing can take place in the sea, rivers, lakes, ponds and even in the canals. There are several entirely different kinds of angling.

The most obvious divisions are fresh water fishing including coarse and fly fishing and sea angling including fishing from piers and the shore and big game fishing. It is now considered a reaction; though the catch may be subsequently cooked, it is not primarily fishing for the pot. It has its competitive side with competitions offering prizes for the biggest catch, and there are angling clubs but in quiet surroundings.

The biggest branch of angling is fresh water fishing for general or coarse fish which are so called to distinguish them from game fish like salmon. Coarse fishing is bait fishing or in the case of pike spinning ground baits also being thrown in before and during fishing.

Old though angling itself is sea angling is a comparatively recent development of it, really dating back only to the nineties of the nineteenth century.
