The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana.
It has a population of around 333,000 people and is situated on the Ljubljanica River.

The city was originally known as the Roman city of Emona but this was destroyed and rebuilt as a Slav town in the 5th century.
It has been under the rule of many different empires and countries, including the Habsburgs, French and Austrian but became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes in 1918. This Kingdom eventually formed Yugoslavia which Slovenia (with Ljubljana as Slovenia's capital) remained part of until 1991 when it became independent.

Ljubljana is a small but beautiful capital city, with a vibrant student population and some wonderful sights including the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) and the Ljubljana castle (Ljubljanski Grad). You can travel to Ljubljana by road, train, bus or plane with the nearest airport being Ljubljana Brnik.

Slovenia is part of the European Union and now takes the Euro currency. It's former currency was called the Tolar.
