The name of the game badminton is derived from the ancient Greek game known as Battledore and Shuttlecock and is a sport played with racquets, wither in singles, where two players play against each other, or in doubles, where four people play in two teams.
Unlike many racket sports, badminton does not use a ball. To play badminton you need what is called a shuttlecock, which is a feathered type of arrow. The shuttlecock is strongly affected by wind, so competitive badminton is always played indoors. In the UK, since medieval times the games was popular with children, who would use paddles called Battledores and would work together to keep the shuttlecock in the air and prevent it from hitting the ground. During the 1860's, British Army officers in Pune, India, began playing the game, adding a competitive element to it and it took off from there. Today it is still played by way of a competition and tournaments are set up all over the world for competitive badminton games.
