How Many Counties Are There In England?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are 81 metropolitan as well as non-metropolitan counties at present in England. These counties are actually territorial divisions of England which were created for reasons of political, administrative and geographical demarcation. The metropolitan counties are South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Tyne and Wear, West Yorkshire and West Midlands. These counties have population statistics generally ranging from 1.2 to 2.8 million. There are 35 shire counties, which are non-metropolitan counties with multiple districts. Unitary authorities on the other hand refer to areas which have only one council. Of these 40 are coterminous with a county.

Most of the current counties can trace their roots to older divisions such as duchies and the Anglo-Saxon shires. England is not only the largest but also the most populous country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. London, largest city in the British Isles, is the country's capital city. It is also the capital of the United Kingdom and is well known as one of the world's Global Cities.
