How Does A Baby Receive Its Nutrients In The Womb?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The foetus inside the womb receives its nutrients primarily from whatever food and drink the mother consumes during her pregnancy. It is essential for the baby to be born healthy, so it is advisable for the mother to avoid smoking and drinking during the nine-month period of her pregnancy.

There are four key players within the mother's body that work in tandem to ensure that the foetus is receiving the nutrients essential for the foetus to grow and develop in the womb. These four partners are the uterus, the placenta, the umbilical cord and the amniotic fluid.

The foetus is actually feeds on the nutrients acquired from the food that is consumed by the mother. Apart from nutrients, the combined functions of the uterus, the placenta, the umbilical cord and the amniotic fluid ensure the foetus also receives the right quantity of oxygen which is essential for it to breathe inside the womb. They also help eliminate the water products of the foetus. This is done with the help of the blood which is exchanged between the mother and the foetus.
