The Righteous Brothers made it famous in the mid sixties but I think a woman also sang a version just prior to them releasing it. Black?

The song was written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann, and Cynthia Weil--they brought it to Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers first - so righteous!--and voila!  It was recorded originally by them , and in January 1965 it was released by them.  During the Christmas of 1964, however, British r&b singer Cilla Black released a cover version of the song before the Righteous Brothers original was imported to the US... (ya snooze ya lose!).

Cilla's version of  that song held the number 2 spot in the UK in 1965 and was held back from hitting #1 by the original version by the (very) Righteous Bro.
