Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) the legendary British explorer joined the navy at an early age; Scott at the age of 13 served as a midshipman on Navy ships like HMS Boadicea and HMS Rover.
He was promoted to the rank of sub-lieutenant and then became an engineering lieutenant on the ship HMS Amphion finally being promoted as First Lieutenant aboard the HMS Majestic which was then the flagship of the Channel fleet. Scott's first polar exploration assignment was when he was requested by Clements Markham to lead the Discovery expedition (1901-04) which was one of the first voyages undertaken to explore the continent of Antarctica.
Scott's second expedition Terra Nova (1910-1913) was an attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole; the expedition was unable to achieve its objective as an expedition led by Roald Amundsen accomplished the feat a few weeks before Scott reached the site; Scott and his party tragically perished on the return journey due to the harsh weather and lack of supplies and equipment.
