How Can I Squeeze Better Fuel Consumption Out Of My Series Land Rover?

Answer Question

There are a number of modifications that will not only improve fuel consumption, they'll also gain you better performance as well.

Here are a selection of the most popular modifications.

Fit a performance exhaust - Getting rid of exhaust gases quickly and efficiently will boost performance noticeably. An aftermarket exhaust system will include a new exhaust manifold so won't be as cheap as you may imagine.

Fit an overdrive - At around £900 for a new one, overdrive don't come cheap. Even second hand ones on eBay are changing hands for around £250 to £300. However, with the potential for 16 forward gears, the better gearing that's possible means a marked improvement in fuel consumption and performance. The cost may take some time to recoup depending on your annual mileage. If it's mostly off-roading you do, an overdrive isn't worth the expense. Owners who do a lot of road miles will notice the difference.

Fit freewheeling hubs - These take the drive off the front axle, so that a fair amount of weight you no longer have to push around when you're in two wheel drive. Combine with an overdrive for optimum returns.
