The Lion King is based on Disney's most successful animated production. This animated feature film broke all the box office previous records in the year it was released. It was a super hit that generated millions for the Walt Disney Company and also won academy awards for its outstanding music and superb story.
And now the award winning director and designer Julie Taymor is bringing this mind blowing super hit from Disney live on stage. It's a theater performance worth seeing because theater can really bring a story to life. This theatrical performance has introduced a new generation of children to the theater.
Conveying the message of "Hakuna Matata" ("No worries"), the story revolves around a young lion cub "Simba" who tries to get the kingship of his home jungle "Savanna" from his devilish uncle "Scar". It is the same old story of the war between good and evil but in the background of jungle and beasts.
The Lion King' is an ideal mix of entertainment and art. This rich performance includes powerful human drama and ancient African rhythms to create an incredible stage drama unlike anything Broadway has ever seen. Julie Taymor, the mastermind behind this exhilarating production and the director of this superlative entertainment has faced many challenges to create a jungle on the stage. Her very first challenge was to decide how she should move towards a narration that is all about flora and fauna, but is in soul a human story. She decided to narrate it by mixing masks and puppetry with live actors. She created huge masks that would represent characters, but left the human face uncovered below the mask to keep the actors' facial expressions alive. It took almost 37,000 hours to fabricate the puppets and masks. More than 232 puppets including rod puppets, shadow puppets and full-sized puppets of 25 species of animals are used in the show. The tallest animals in the show are the 18 foot exotic giraffes while the tiniest animal is the trick mouse of 5 inches.
The Lion King at theater is an astonishing chain of picturesque innovation, dynamic costumes and choreographic wonders that give the story an extra brilliance. The Lion King is a mind blowing stage performance, the quality of production is matchless, the acts are full of life, performance is great and the music is remarkably brilliant. So come and see the beauty of Africa on stage and explore how the entire savanna comes to life.
