Probably the most ubiquitous and best known of all the birds of prey in southern Africa is the black-shouldered kite.
They are most commonly seen at the side of the road perched on telephone poles or hovering expectantly over open grassland in readiness to swoop on prey. The black-shouldered kite is easily identified by its black shoulder markings, white underparts, red eyes, black bill and yellow legs. They are not large birds, attaining an average body mass of 250 gm.
They are widespread but usually found in greatest numbers in areas where the rodent population is plentiful. But the black-shouldered kite is also a nomad and willing to migrate to wherever prey is seasonally available. It is normally seen solo or in pairs.
Also widespread in Africa is the black kite. Ironically, the black kite isn't black at all, it has brown plumage with black only appearing on the bird's bill.
