What Does The Sorority Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Simply speaking, a sorority is a society or association of ladies. It usually refers to a club of girls or women in a college, especially undergraduates. The word sorority originates from the Latin word 'soror,' which means 'sister.' If sorority is for girls, fraternity is for boys. Fraternity comes from the Latin word 'frater,' which means 'brother.'

Sorority can also pertain to charitable and social organizations. Sororities and fraternities are also known as 'student corporations' outside North America. Most of the sororities are dedicated to community service, leadership qualities and developing social skills. There are certain requirements in a sorority with relation to housing, membership etc. Sororities are found to maintain a system of rituals that are symbolic as well as secretive.
