What Has Been The Worst Year For Fatalities Climbing Everest?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Although the world's highest peak has witnessed a lot of tragedies, the year 1996 was said to be the worst ever climbing season in Everest history when nineteen people lost their lives trying to make it to the top. On May 10th 1996, a deadly storm that raged through the Himalayan range stranded many climbers on one of the final points just before the summit—known as the Hillary Step—taking the lives of eight mountaineers. The storm took with it experienced climbers and novices alike. Research conducted 8 years later suggested that the stark 14% fall in the oxygen level on that day played a significant part in the tragedy.
