American Idol is about giving the general public a chance to show their talent in singing and letting the rest of the country vote on who they do and do not like. 12 people are selected to sing on television (from hundreds of thousands of contestants) and with each passing episode, one person is voted off by a panel of judges and the country until one person is left. That person is granted a singing contract so that they may start their career as a professional singer.
