Finding a good SLR is really tough, you have to try and research them a little bit so you know exactly what all the ads are telling you. I found an amazing deal on e-Bay for a D40x, and I am incredibly pleased with it. I chose it because I take a number of action shots (e.g. A football game) and an old Olympus was not getting good enough shots.  So I chose a camera with a higher shutter speed.
You should pick your camera based on what kind of pictures you take, always ask advice from the older pros because they've seen a wider range of cameras.  When you look at a camera in the store try to see how confused or not confused you are with the settings, buttons and lenses (etc.).
My personal favorites are Nikon because they make their own lens glass, yet I'm always a little partial to an Olympus because it is compatible with a variety of different memory cards.
You can go on Amazon.com, Buy.com or even e-Bay and always find a good deal.  You just have to know what you're looking for exactly.

If you're looking for a 35mm camera I would recommend looking at a camera shop or on ebay for an older one. I own a 35mm Minolta  from the early 80's and have been told its one of the best ever made. If you are looking for a digital SLR I would say that the Canon Rebel is great. I bought mine on black Friday last year and got the camera body, lens, memory card, and printer for less than $1000 at Best Buy.
