Does The Common Centaury Grow On Sandbanks?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The common centaury, which is scientifically known as the Centaurium erythraea, is a flower that grows upright up to a maximum height of about 25 centimetres. It is an annually flowering plant, commonly found in dry grassy places, especially in the sand dunes in the north. It is also found in scrubs, roadsides, garrigue and usually on calcareous soil. It is a highly widespread plant, with a basal rosette of oval or elliptical-shaped opposite pairs of leaves on stems.

Clusters of short or medium-sized pink, pinkish or almost purple, five-petalled flowers, measuring about 10 to 50 centimetres, begin to appear between the months of June and September. Common Centaury is a very variable plant. It is short to medium in size, and usually has only a single hairless stem. The stem branches out above the mid-point of the plant. The roots are boiled to make a bitter brew that helps in improving digestion.
