To avoid being stuck with the Roommate from Hell, don't choose the first person you meet. Talk to a lot of people who want to be your roommate, not just one or two. Ask some serious questions; if the person you're talking to objects to these questions, then you don't want to live with this person! Some important questions are: (1) do you use drugs or alcohol? (2) do you have a criminal record of any kind? (3) Can you provide references proving that you have always paid your rent on time? (4) Do you have pets? (5) Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend that will be coming to visit often? (6) Do you smoke cigarettes? (7) Do you have a job so that you can pay rent? In addition to asking these questions, look closely at the person's boy language, tone of voice, and manner of dress. If someone is "bad news," you will probably be able to tell if you spend enough time with him/her.
