    The game of chess originated in the northern part of India though many also claim that it originated in China. It was known as shatranj or chaturang in Hindi and Sanskrit. One can trace the origins of this game back to the 6th century. The other countries which knew and played chess since the ancient times include countries like Egypt, Persia, Turkey and Arabia. The earlier versions of chess in India consisted of four divisions of military i.e. infantry, cavalry, elephants and chariots.

    This game was almost unknown in the western world until the 9th century. But since then this game got a lot of exposure and popularity. Today the game of chess is known and played all over the world. It is a game which needs a lot of thinking and planning. It is believed that in the earlier days this game was about training the soldiers and the army about warfare and instructing them in war tactics. Some of the most famous chess champions in the modern world include Boris Spassky, Bobby Fischer, Garry KasParov, Vishwanathan Anand, Paul Morphy etc.
