The above statement is a line from the Genesis, which is the first book of the Torah, the Tanakh, as well as the Old Testament. As per Jewish tradition, the book is regarded to have been written by Moses; hence at times it is also referred to as The First Book of Moses.

According to the Genesis, initially the heavens and the earth were made by God. The earth was formless in the beginning, after which God created the very first day and night. Then came the land, the water bodies, the plant life, the celestial bodies that is the stars, moon etc, animals and birds etc. After creating all this, on the seventh day, God finally made man, in the form of a male and a female. These two divine creations were called as Adam and Eve, who were made out of dust obtained from the earth itself, after which god breathed into man's nostrils, and the man thus turned into a living person.
