Are There Buffalo In Yellowstone National Park?

Answer Question

Technically, no, there are no buffalo in Yellowstone.  There are, in fact, bison aplenty, though.  How can I say this?  The scientific name for the animal commonly known to Americans as buffalo is Bison bison.  Scientists also refer to this animal as the American Bison.

Bison and buffalo differ in the placement of their horns.  Buffalo (e.g. Water buffalo found in Africa and Australia) have horns that grow out of the top of their heads.  Bison, on the other hand, have horns that grow out of the sides of their heads.

So, a zoologist might tell you that there are no buffalo in Yellowstone, while the average American will tell you there are.  Common names are names that aren't necessarily scientifically correct, but are accepted by general consensus.

And, yes, I call the animals to which you refer buffalo.

I went to Yellowstone National Park about five and a half years ago, and we actually got stuck behind the buffalo herd for about three hours. I think they have the biggest herd of wild buffalo in North America. I was only nine when we went there, though.
