The @ symbol is used when someone wants to abbreviate or short hand the word "at". It is more commonly used when typing an email to someone: I.e. ______@aol.com

Usually the "@" symbol is an abbreviation of the word at. But it got it's roots from accouting...it was an abbreviation for "at the rate of". For example, 5 lbs of potatoes at the rate of $1.75 per pound.
