The last state to join the USA was the island State of Hawaii; it comprises 19 islands situated in the Pacific Ocean about 2300 miles (3700 km) from the mainland. Though the islands have been a part of the USA since 1898 they constituted a territory rather than a state. It was only in August 21, 1959 during President Dwight D Eisenhower's tenure that statehood was accorded to Hawaii.
The total population of the state is 1,211,537; the capital Honolulu is the main city with majority of the population concentrated in the region. Tourism constitutes the major industry in Hawaii owing to its climate, natural beauty, unique flora and fauna and vibrant culture. The islands are home to a number of communities of different ethnic backgrounds like Native Hawaiian, white American, Filipino, Japanese and Chinese.
