Before understanding what a reflux condenser is, let us understand the meaning of condenser. A condenser is an apparatus that transforms vapour into liquid. Thus a reflux condenser is a condenser in which vapour over a boiling liquid is condensed and then filled back into the vessel to prevent its contents from getting hot. The reflux condenser is mostly used in the field of chemical engineering.
A reflux condenser is in fact made up of two condensers, the first one being the reflux condenser, which distils the liquid by removing impurities and water from the vapour before the vapour moves on to the second condenser where it is cooled.
